You are warmly invited to attend a Scriptural Reasoning Workshop in

Bath Islamic Society

The recent challenges of C21st have brought religion sharply back into public awareness. This has led to a plethora of new-style inter-faith initiatives and ideas. Scriptural Reasoning is one of these initiatives. According to the Scriptural Reasoning Website, ‘SR is a tool for inter-faith dialogue whereby people of different faiths come together to read and reflect on their scriptures. Unlike some forms of inter-faith engagement, it is not about seeking agreement but rather exploring the texts and their possible interpretations across faith boundaries and learning to ‘disagree better’.

SR does not require any special knowledge. That is, anyone can participate in SR. However, it works best when there are people from each tradition who are passionate about reading their scriptures, and really believe those scriptures are significant for their lives. But no one needs to have a religious education or an academic background to participate in it. A passion for their scriptures is all that is required. The outcome is often a deeper understanding of others’ as well as one’s own scriptures, in addition to the development of strong bonds across faith communities. Hence, SR creates a space for hospitable dialogue between people who are deeply committed to their traditions and at the same time seek to understand and appreciate the other faith traditions. It is now practised in a range of contexts in communities across the world, though it mainly started as an academic practice.

Bath Islamic Society is pleased to announce the launch of its series of Scriptural Reasoning workshops, which is meant to run on the first Saturday of the month. This series is aimed to cover miscellaneous topics, ranging from science and faith to ethical and social questions.
